Difference between Standard Mover and a Day Mover
Over the years, my experience as an underwriter has demanded many, many conversations with Insurance professionals, as well as Movers, regarding the differences between a “Day Mover” and “Standard Mover”. Though, there are many differences that I’ll note below, the easy answer to this question is a Standard Mover Day has a warehouse to store clients’ goods in and a Day Mover does not.
Day Mover: This is a Mover without a warehouse. Unique, in that it is specifically designed for the moving operation. Usually completes their contracts within a day’s work.
- Cargo policy would be restricted to a $.60 per pound valuation and subject to program minimum premium
- Normal radius of operations typically local/intermediate (less than 250 miles)
- The valuation limitation can be reviewed based on claims history, years in business and filing status- to see if qualified to remove the limitation.
- Typical fleet consists of box trucks.
- Independent mover (no valine affiliation)
- State filings (not typical to issue ICC filings; though there are exceptions in our program)
- Usually write the auto, GL and IM lines for day movers. Typically, no property.
- The idea behind writing Day Movers is the hope they grow the business and move into the Standard Mover program

Standard Mover: Full service mover with a warehouse.
- Has both state filings and ICC filings
- Both Van-line affiliated and independent movers
- Write Auto, GL, property, crime and Inland marine
- Typical to see fleet of light service trucks, box trucks, tractors and trailers
We are excited to write both Day Movers and Standard Movers in our program; “here is to new beginnings, new adventures, and moving to new places!”
